The late afternoon sun warmed Maya’s back as she watered the petunias. The rhythmic whoosh of the hose, the scent of damp earth, the buzzing of a nearby bee – it was all profoundly familiar and calming. Her mother's email had arrived an hour ago, but it felt like a distant ripple. She’d read it, nodded, and then gone back to tending the flowers.

A soft breeze rustled the leaves of the old oak tree in the front yard. Its shade offered a welcome reprieve from the heat. Maya wiped a smudge of dirt from her forehead with the back of her hand, the movement slow and unhurried. The news, a conversion to Buddhism, felt like a gentle shift in the tapestry of their lives, not a tear.

The chimes hanging on the porch began to tinkle softly as she finished with the flowers. She went inside, thinking of tea and a good book. The email could wait.
